“Everybody is treated as an individual; you are not just a number.”
A DIY accident in July last year saw Pierre Leroy fall five feet through wooden decking. The impact caused damage to his ribs and shoulder, leaving him in extreme pain and discomfort.
A visit to A&E confirmed shoulder tissue damage and he was told to return in one week for a check up. Pierre was still in a lot of pain, and upon his next hospital visit, he was told that the injury would take around 12 weeks to heal.
After three months, the pain was so persistent that Pierre contacted his GP who arranged an MRI scan at The Horder Centre. The scan revealed a tear in the supraspinatus muscle, which would require surgery to repair.
Pierre, 65, from Hildenborough explained: “The GP sent the referral form to the NHS and I received an appointment to be seen in Sevenoaks at the end of March. The hospital website said it would be three more months after the appointment for the operation to take place.
“By this point, it was December and I couldn’t wait that long so I decided to go private and I contacted The Horder Centre.
“My consultation at The Horder Centre was with Mr Per Anderberg, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, who explained what needed to be done following an x-ray that took place on the same day.”
Pierre required rotator cuff surgery, which took place in February. The procedure also included shaving of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint to reduce pressure on the rotator cuff.
The surgery took place in the morning under general anaesthetic and by 4.35pm, Pierre was ready to be picked up to go home and follow the aftercare advice to aid his recovery.
Speaking about his recovery, Pierre said: “The stitches were removed two weeks after the procedure.
“My arm was in a sling for six weeks, which I had to wear day and night, except for removing it to shower. It wasn’t easy, but luckily it was my left arm that was affected - I’m right handed.
“I had physiotherapy at The Horder Centre four weeks after the operation and again six weeks after the operation when I also saw Mr Anderberg for a check up. Everybody was pleased with the progress.
“I am a retired PE teacher and have been active my whole life. My passion is windsurfing, I’m a windsurfing coach, so this injury ruined the summer season.
“My aim was to not miss another summer season, so I was delighted to have been seen so quickly by The Horder Centre.
“Everybody is treated as an individual; you are not just a number. From reception to nurses, everybody knows your name. I am very happy with the whole experience.”
Two months after the operation, Pierre is continuing to make great strides in his recovery and he is looking forward to a summer back out on the sea windsurfing.
“I am so pleased that surgery and recovery has gone so well for Pierre and anticipate a successful return to windsurfing to be enjoyed for many years to come."
