Horder Healthcare Physiotherapy participate in national shoulder pain study

The Horder Healthcare Physiotherapy team have commenced recruiting patients to participate in a formal research study investigating who best to treat shoulder pain.

The Physio team is working with Keele University in a research study (called PANDA-S) that aims to improve care for people presenting with shoulder pain into physiotherapy services.

Shoulder pain is common. In England, 1.5 million people visit their GP with shoulder pain every year. Most people recover quickly, but in 40% the shoulder pain lasts longer than 6 months and affects sleep, work, and everyday life.

The study will generate evidence to support physiotherapists and patients when discussing the impact of their shoulder condition, when making decisions about advice and treatment options, and how help people manage their shoulder pain problem over time.

PANDA-S is conducted in Physiotherapy services across England and will involve more than 800 people with shoulder pain. Participants will be followed up for 12 months to look at changes over time in shoulder pain, disability, sleep, work and other outcomes. Findings will become available by the end of 2026.

Eligible patients will be sent consent packs to complete if they wish to participate.

“This is an exciting project for our Physiotherapy Team to be involved in, as it will improve how best to help patients experiencing persistent shoulder pain. This is only the second time that Horder Healthcare has been involved in formal research and is a great example of how we strive to improve the wellbeing of our community.”
