Surgery on Lower Back

Surgery on Lower Back

Orthopaedic Surgery | NHS, Self-Pay, Insured

When conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes fail to alleviate lower back pain, or when structural problems in the spine cause significant discomfort and disability, surgery may be necessary.

Surgery can be a pivotal step in restoring mobility and alleviating pain for those suffering from spinal conditions.

Lower Back Surgery Treatments

There are a number of procedures that can help to relieve pain, restore function, and improve the overall quality of life for patients suffering from chronic back issues.

Lower back surgery treatments at The Horder Centre are designed to address different conditions that affect the lumbar spine. The procedure will depend on the patient’s condition.

What is lumbar decompression surgery?

This surgical procedure removes portions of bone or soft tissue to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves in the lower back (lumbar region).

Common conditions treated

Lumbar decompression surgery (including Lumbar Hemilaminectomy Surgery) is intended for patients with specific spinal conditions causing nerve compression and chronic pain in the lower back and legs.

These conditions can include:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Bones spurs
  • Facet joint hypertrophy

What does the procedure involve?

After the patient is placed under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a posterior incision over the affected area of the lumbar spine. Using meticulous surgical techniques, the muscles and soft tissues are gently retracted to expose the vertebrae.

The decompression process may involve removing parts of the lamina (laminectomy), enlarging the foramen (foraminotomy), or excising herniated disc material (discectomy) to create more space within the spinal canal and alleviate nerve compression.

How soon will I recover from lumbar decompression surgery?

Patients may need to stay in the hospital for a few days, depending on their overall health and the complexity of the surgery.

Early mobilisation is encouraged to prevent complications such as blood clots. Patients may be assisted to stand and walk within a day of surgery.

Gradual increase in activity is encouraged, with short walks and light activities as tolerated. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and excessive bending or twisting of the spine for about six weeks.

Most patients can resume normal activities and return to work at around four to six weeks.
