Horder Healthcare awards latest travelling bursary to orthopaedic trainee

In Horder Healthcare’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of orthopaedic specialists, we are thrilled to announce the recipient of our latest traveling bursary; Markus Sagmeister.

This bursary assists orthopaedic trainees who have completed their formal NHS training and wish to travel to overseas centres of orthopaedic excellence to add a final level of experience before applying for consultant positions on their return to the UK.

Markus is in his final year of Trauma and Orthopaedics training at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

While he is currently based at Princess Royal Hospital, in Haywards Heath, and Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, he will soon embark on a Fellowship in Sydney, Australia, as part of his professional development journey.

Expressing his gratitude, Markus said: “It is fantastic to receive support for such a unique opportunity. I’m looking forward to gaining experience in a different culture of orthopaedics on the other side of the world.

“It will be wonderful to return with enriched skills and memories to share with colleagues and trainees across the region.”

We offer up to three bursaries each year.  Applicants are invited from the Kent, Surrey & Sussex (KSS) NHS training rotas and are assessed by Dr Paul Reynolds, our Medical Director. To date, we have supported trainees who have travelled to Berlin, South Africa and Australia to name a few.

We look forward to welcoming Markus back to The Horder Centre on his return, where he will be invited to attend a meeting of The Horder Centre Medical Advisory Committee (MAC) and undertake a brief presentation on his experience.

"We are delighted to award Markus with our travelling bursary. By experiencing different healthcare systems, surgical techniques, and cultural approaches to orthopaedic care, trainees can broaden their perspectives and refine their clinical expertise. This exposure not only enriches their individual skill set but it can also enhance the overall quality of orthopaedic care they can provide upon their return to the UK.”
