Celebrating ODP Day 2026: A Day in the Life of Our Theatre Teams

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) are at the heart of every patient journey at The Horder Centre, and for ODP Day, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible teamwork, compassion and expertise they bring to our theatres every day.

Our latest “Day in the Life” video follows the dedicated teams working across anaesthetics, scrub and recovery, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the vital role they play in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.

From preparing anaesthetic rooms and checking specialist equipment, to setting up theatres and supporting patients after surgery, every member of the team plays an essential part in ensuring patients feel safe, comfortable and cared for throughout their experience.

The video also highlights the importance of teamwork within theatre, and how communication, trust and humour help create a positive environment for both patients and staff.

Whether supporting patients before surgery, assisting during procedures or helping them recover afterwards, our ODPs make a lasting difference every single day.

This ODP Day, we thank all our Operating Department Practitioners for their dedication, professionalism and compassionate care.

Well as an ODP we cover all aspects of the BID department. We cover anaesthetic scrub and recovery. So in regards to anaesthetics, we come in and we set up the anaesthetic room ready for the anaesthetist to come in and perform their area of the operation. We make sure the machines are all in full working order and then of course then we get ready for the patient so then it's all about the patient and we make sure that the patient comes down and has a nice clean and relaxed environment. If you're on scrub you'll come in and set the theatre up, prepare all your sets for the day, check all your boxes to make sure that all your soft supplementary items are correct. And in the recovery part of our role we will look after the patient post surgery and make sure that they are pain free and that they're comfortable and they're warm and they're ready for the ward. It's fun. It is fun. In the appropriate times you can have fun in theatre. Everyone's got a pretty good sense of humour and the days don't feel like they drag really because everyone's on the same page. Everyone's got good sense of humour. You can have fun with the patients because some of them are quite nervous but you can really sort of talk them down and make them laugh and try and make it a bit easier on them. I enjoy that it's the teamwork. The teamwork here is great. You work with a really good bunch of people meeting all the patients and ensuring that we create a good patient journey for them.
