Professional profile
Mr Matthew Ricks is a specialist fellowship trained Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the shoulder, elbow and hand. Mr Ricks specialises in the comprehensive management of all conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow and hand.
With international fellowships in France, Australia and the UK, he received extensive training in surgical best practice, while consistently keeping apace with the latest surgical techniques. Following his surgical training, he carried out fellowships in Melbourne Australia, Nice France and Wrightington UK. Following a fellowship in Wrightington, covering shoulder, elbow and hands, he was appointed a consultant at the unit. After four years of consultancy at the unit, the opportunity arose to move back to Sussex where he is originally from and where his family are. He then took up a Consultancy at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.
As a Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder, Elbow and Hand Surgeon, Mr Ricks handles complex cases of the upper limb. Mr Ricks has held committee positions in the European Shoulder and Elbow society and the British Hand society.

Mr Matthew Ricks has achieved over 14 awards and research grants. He has a 1st Class BSc and two Masters degrees in the area of Orthopaedics. He has won awards from the British Trauma Society, British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and the prestigious Ronald Raven Barbers’ Award. He maintains a keen interest in teaching and has been invited to become an examiner at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
