“I’ve got my life back.”
A single awkward movement led to a year of worsening knee pain and a struggle to find the right treatment for Liz. Find out how a single Arthrosamid injection removed the pain and allowed her to walk freely again.
“I moved awkwardly while kneeling down and felt this terrible burning in my knee,” said Liz. “It was awful. I was taking painkillers for a month after that.
“Eventually, I went to my GP, who referred me to MSK services, and from there I was sent to physiotherapy. I followed every exercise they gave me, hoping it would help. Instead, things deteriorated. When I phoned to say I could no longer walk on it, they told me to go back to the GP for more pain relief.”
After several months, Liz was unable to cope with the pain, so she decided to pay privately for a consultation with Mr Tofunmi Oni, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Horder Centre.
He arranged an X-ray and, after assessing her, he explained that a meniscus tear was a strong possibility, but that an MRI was needed to confirm this. He provided a supporting letter to MSK to help advance the request for further imaging.
Liz was then on the NHS pathway and was seen by an Advanced Practitioner at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH).

Liz explained: “PRH told me over the phone I would need either a steroid injection or a knee replacement, which completely shocked me. I asked if I could be referred to a consultant of my choice as an NHS patient. They said yes, which was such a relief.
“I saw Mr Oni again at The Horder Centre, and he explained that the knee wasn’t yet severe enough for replacement surgery. The NHS options were physiotherapy or a steroid injection. He also mentioned the injection Arthrosamid, explaining that I was an ideal candidate, but it was only available through self pay.
“I discussed it with my family and partner, and we all agreed Arthrosamid was the best option and we used the interest free loan through The Horder Centre.
“On the day, the injection was painful, and I jumped. They added more anaesthetic, and the nurse said, ‘A couple more seconds,’ and then it was over. The nurse was lovely and very reassuring.
“I took a couple of days off work, and I did have a flare up a few days after the injection, which can happen. It made the knee swell, become stiff, and throb, but I just made sure I took painkillers and kept moving, doing the exercises from the leaflet.
“I’d been limping for a year prior, but almost marched into my follow up appointment. I didn’t even realise things like going up the stairs didn’t hurt anymore. I’ even felt confident enough to return to riding both my motorbike and horse.
“I’ve been raving about Arthrosamid. The Horder Centre was lovely, and I felt very comfortable with Mr Oni and his practitioner Libby; they’re a really good team. I’m hopeful if I ever need further treatment, I can have it done at The Horder Centre. I’ve got my life back.”
“It’s always satisfying to see how a minimally invasive treatment such as an Arthrosamid injection can make a meaningful difference. It’s great to see Liz back to riding both motorbikes and horses, a real reflection of how the right intervention can help patients return to the activities that matter most to them.”
