Ann Waterman managed to climb around 3,000ft to the top of Mount Vesuvius just six months after a hip operation at The Horder Centre.
Ann, 67, had her right hip replaced by consultant surgeon Senthil Velayudham in March after it had caused problems for at least three years.
Although Ann found the first two months after the operation “hard going”, she made sure she stuck to the recommended exercise programme and found it really helped.
Ann, who lives in Tonbridge, said: “I was looked after very well and liked the fact that most patients were there for similar operations, so you didn’t feel alone.
The first couple of months after the operation were the toughest. I only managed to walk about a quarter of a mile with a stick, but I gradually started walking a little further and then one day I realised I actually walked better without the stick.
“I managed to get up Vesuvius, with the help of my daughter Pippa and by taking breaks. Of course, it helped that the views were amazing and that there was a café at the top for a cup of tea. I would never have been able to do the climb before the operation.”
